How you get around on the 3-hour tour. A taxi collects you from your hotel and drops you at the cafe — that is the only time you are in a car. From the moment the coffee is finished you are in a cyclo, and you stay in it for every stop on the route: the market, the cathedral, the railway line, Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh and West Lake. The cyclo sets you down at the restaurant at the end, which is where the tour finishes.

The 3-hour tour moves through four acts. The 1-hour ride is act two on its own — the cyclo, the Old Quarter, and nothing to wait for.

Inside the Mausoleum is not part of the tour. It keeps its own short opening hours and closes for months at a time, so we view Ba Dinh Square from outside — which is where the guard change happens anyway.

Rain rarely stops a cyclo. Every cyclo carries a hood and a cover for your legs. If the weather turns genuinely severe we move your booking to another day at no cost.

Before you book

There are three. The 1-Hour Cyclo Ride is transport and sightseeing, nothing else: one hour in a cyclo through the Old Quarter past Dong Xuan Market, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Hanoi railway line, at $6 (160.000₫) per person — no guide, no coffee, no food, no entrance fees, no hotel pickup. The Small Group Tour is a full three hours at $40 (1.050.000₫) per person and includes hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, the egg coffee show with a drink each, the whole route by cyclo, an English-speaking guide, every entrance fee and a local lunch or dinner. The Private Tour is exactly the same three hours at $65 (1.700.000₫) per person, with the difference that nobody outside your party joins: your own guide, your own cyclos and your own pace.

Every price is quoted from two guests up, because that is what a cyclo seats and what a guide and a driver cost to run. One guest costs us very nearly the same as two, so a solo booking is charged at 1.85× the per-person rate: $11.10 (290.000₫) for the 1-hour ride, $74 (1.950.000₫) for the small group tour and $120 (3.150.000₫) for the private tour. Add a second guest and you both drop straight back to $6, $40 or $65 each.

On the 3-hour Small Group Tour, yes — free pickup from any hotel inside the Old Quarter. Give us the hotel name in the booking form and your guide will be at reception at the agreed time. If you are staying further out, put the address in anyway and we will either quote a short transfer or arrange to meet you at the cafe. On the 1-hour ride there is no pickup; you meet your cyclo at a corner in the Old Quarter and we send the exact spot with a map pin when we confirm.

A taxi collects you from your hotel and drops you at the cafe where the tour begins — that short transfer is the only time you sit in a car. Once the coffee is finished you get into a cyclo and stay in it for the whole route: Dong Xuan Market, St Joseph’s Cathedral, the Tran Phu railway line, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and West Lake. Your cyclo sets you down at the restaurant at the end, which is where the tour finishes. Every stop on the published route is labelled with how you arrive.

Everyone on the 3-hour tour watches the egg coffee being made, then chooses their own drink: egg coffee (cà phê trứng), salt coffee (cà phê muối) or coconut coffee (cà phê dừa) — one per guest, and a party of four can have four different things. If you avoid egg, the coconut is the one to take. If you do not drink coffee at all, say so in the notes and the cafe will pour you tea or a fresh juice instead at no extra cost.

Not on this tour. The Mausoleum opens only on certain mornings, closes entirely for a period each year, and runs a queue that can swallow an hour on its own — none of which fits a three-hour itinerary. We view Ba Dinh Square from outside, which is where the ceremonial guard change happens anyway. If seeing inside matters to you, tell us and we will suggest a morning to go independently before or after your tour.

Two people per cyclo, and that is the maximum. Two adults sit comfortably side by side, and a small child can ride on a parent’s lap. Larger parties ride in a convoy of cyclos, one behind the other, so nobody is split off on their own. If you would rather not share a seat at all, add a cyclo each in the booking form: $4 (105.000₫) per person on the 1-hour ride and $20 (520.000₫) per person on the 3-hour tour, and you get a cyclo and driver to yourself. Our drivers are licensed, experienced Old Quarter cyclo drivers who stay on routes cyclos are permitted to use. There is no hard age limit — the seat is low, wide and easy to get in and out of, which suits older travellers well. If anyone in your party has limited mobility, mention it in the notes and we will make sure the right cyclo is waiting.

Light rain is not a problem — every cyclo carries a folding hood and a cover for your legs, and Hanoi in the drizzle is genuinely lovely from under one. If the weather turns severe we will contact you and move your booking to another day or another time at no cost. Nothing is prepaid, so there is nothing to reclaim either way.

At the restaurant, over your included lunch or dinner. Your guide says goodbye at the table rather than hurrying you back into a car, so you can sit as long as you like. The restaurant is a short walk or a very cheap ride from the Old Quarter, and your guide will point you at the easiest way home before leaving.

Yes, and the per-person price does not change. Families, friends and small tour groups ride as a convoy of cyclos, which is a fine sight in itself.
