And because Thai Vi Temple and Kha Luong Pagoda are working places of worship, bring something that covers shoulders and knees; a light scarf in your bag is enough.

Children are welcome, and the farm and the cooking class are usually the parts they remember. Two things to weigh up honestly: it is a full day, and the jeep is an open vehicle on country roads. The standard day is a sampan through Trang An or Tam Coc, a climb up Hang Mua, and a car park in between. This one has no boat and no queue: it spends the day on backroads through Thung Sen, Thung Nang and Thung Nham, at two quiet temples, on a working farm, and at two cave shrines — Linh Coc and Dong Tien — that most visitors never reach. If it is your first time in Ninh Binh and you want the postcard, book the boat. If you have a second day, or you would rather see the place people actually live in, book this.
