Explore Ninh Binh, in depth

A closer look at every stop — what to expect, how long it takes, and real photos from the ground.

Trang An Trang An Trang An Trang An
Boat · Caves · UNESCO

Trang An

2.5~3 hrs · Rowboat

Vietnam's most celebrated waterway — a UNESCO World Heritage site where rowers glide you through three low limestone caves and past ancient valley temples. The scenery shifts every bend: open rice paddies, mirror-still water, sheer karst walls draped in figs. The boats are rowed foot-paddle style by local women, often singing softly as they go. Best earlier in the morning before tour groups arrive.

Tam Coc Tam Coc Tam Coc Tam Coc
Boat · Rice Fields

Tam Coc Boat Ride

1.5~2 hrs · Rowboat

Called the "Halong Bay on land," Tam Coc takes you through three natural caves carved into limestone mountains, flanked by golden rice fields that reflect the sky. The pace is slow and meditative — exactly the point. Season affects the scenery: green paddy May–June, golden harvest Sept–Oct. A classic for a reason.

Hang Mua Hang Mua Hang Mua Hang Mua
Viewpoint · Iconic

Hang Mua Viewpoint

1~1.5 hrs · ~500 steps

Roughly 500 stone steps wind up to a dragon-crowned ridge — the most photographed viewpoint in Ninh Binh. At the top, the Tam Coc river coils through the paddy valley below like a silver ribbon. Early morning gives you soft light and near-empty paths. Bring water and wear grippy shoes. The climb takes 20–30 minutes each way and is very much worth it.

Hoa Lu Hoa Lu Hoa Lu Hoa Lu
History · Temples

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

45~60 min · Walking

Vietnam's first royal capital (968–1010 AD), set inside a natural fortress of limestone mountains. Two ancient temples honour the Dinh and Le dynasties — atmospheric, incense-filled, and remarkably uncrowded. The landscape here feels like a walled kingdom frozen in time. Combines naturally with Trang An just minutes away.

Bai Dinh Bai Dinh Bai Dinh Bai Dinh
Temple · Walking

Bai Dinh Pagoda

1.5~2 hrs · Walking

Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist complex — a series of grand halls, 500 stone arhat statues lining the corridors, and a towering bronze Buddha with sweeping hilltop views. Electric carts ferry you to the top (included). The scale is genuinely awe-inspiring. Go early to avoid weekend crowds. Dress code: knees and shoulders covered.

Bich Dong Bich Dong Bich Dong Bich Dong
Temple · Cave Pagoda

Bich Dong Pagoda

45~60 min · Walking & Climbing

A three-tier cave pagoda built into a mountainside — one of Ninh Binh's most romantic hidden gems. Cross a stone bridge over a lotus pond, then climb through successive cave shrines as the mountain opens above you. Pairs perfectly with cycling and duck feeding nearby. Dress code applies: knees and shoulders covered.

Van Long Van Long Van Long Van Long
Nature · Wetland

Van Long Reserve

1.5~2 hrs · Rowboat

Vietnam's largest wetland nature reserve — glass-still water reflecting jagged limestone peaks like a painting. Far quieter than Trang An, Van Long is home to the endangered Delacour's langur (a black-and-white monkey found almost nowhere else on earth). The silence here is extraordinary. Best at dawn when mist still clings to the cliffs.

Thung Nham Thung Nham Thung Nham Thung Nham
Nature · Eco Park

Thung Nham Bird Valley

2~2.5 hrs · Boat + Walking

A lush eco-park where boat trails wind through flooded forest, ancient cave shrines, and a bird sanctuary where thousands of egrets and storks return to roost at dusk. The bird garden is particularly magical in late afternoon. Also has a bear rescue centre and butterfly garden. Less visited than the big sites — a genuine surprise.

Cuc Phuong Cuc Phuong Cuc Phuong Cuc Phuong
Nature · Full-day

Cuc Phuong National Park

~6 hrs · Jungle walking

Vietnam's oldest national park — ancient rainforest with thousand-year-old trees, the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre (where you can see rescued langurs and lorises up close), and prehistoric cave paintings. Best suited to longer days or guests who'd rather skip the boat rides for something wilder. Needs a full day to explore properly — we recommend pairing it with just Van Long or the Bear Sanctuary if you're combining stops.

Bear Sanctuary Bear Sanctuary Bear Sanctuary Bear Sanctuary
Wildlife · Conservation

Bear Sanctuary

45~60 min · Walking

A rare chance to see rescued sun bears and moon bears up close in a genuine conservation setting. The sanctuary takes in bears rescued from bile farms and illegal wildlife trade, rehabilitating them in large forested enclosures. Guides explain each bear's story — it's moving, educational, and one of those stops that stays with you long after the trip.

Cycling Tam Coc Duck feeding Cycling village Cycling rice fields
Active · Village Life

Cycling & Duck Feeding

1~1.5 hrs · Easy cycling

Pedal quiet village lanes through Tam Coc's rice paddies, cross stone bridges, and stop to hand-feed a flock of ducks along the way — one of those simple moments guests always mention afterwards. Pairs perfectly with Bich Dong Pagoda just minutes away. Bicycle rental is included; no experience needed.

Must-See Highlights

Trang An or Tam Coc Boat Ride

The most popular activity in Ninh Binh.

Trang An: Generally considered the more scenic option, featuring limestone mountains, caves, and peaceful waterways. Boat ride: ~2.5–3 hours.

Tam Coc: Shorter boat ride (~1h45m) with beautiful countryside scenery.

Note: Tam Coc is famous for its rice fields only during the rice season (approximately late April to early June). Outside this period, the scenery mainly consists of rivers, limestone mountains, and countryside landscapes.

Mua Cave Viewpoint

One of the best viewpoints in Ninh Binh. Climbing is required to reach the top, non-climbers can relax by the lotus pond, enjoy a coffee, and take photos while waiting with the tour guide.

Good to explore

Loved by travellers

A few words from guests who built their own Ninh Binh day with us. (More reviews are added regularly.)

"We were a little uncertain at first because there aren’t many reviews yet, but now we can definitively say this is one of the best tours we’ve ever had. Lana was very helpful in tailoring to our requests and super responsive. Anna was just a joy as our guide! She is so energetic, patient with us as we explored Ninh Binh in 100+ degree heat, and very knowledgeable about the area and Vietnam. We learned a lot, felt taken care of, and had such a good time. Lunch was also great and driver Henry was lovely. Thank you to everyone!"

"We had a fantastic day trip to Ninh Binh, organized by Lana and our driver Hung. One day is sufficient to cover 3-4 interesting sites. Lana provided a complimentary lunch, catering to our vegetarian diet, which was thoughtful and very delicious. Our driver was also very responsive whenever we needed him to collect us after exploring different places, he drove safely and efficiently, offering sun shades for the car when it got very hot in the afternoon. 10/10 I would go for Lana’s travel company again whenever I visit Vietnam in the future! All the best!"

"We had an unreal private day trip to Ninh Binh. Our guide Anna spoke excellent English, making it easy to learn about the local history, culture, and attractions throughout the day. She was incredibly friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and happy to answer our questions. What really stood out was the flexibility of the tour. We were able to tailor the day to our interests, with plenty of freedom to decide where we wanted to go and how much time we spent at each location. We especially loved Hang Mua and Tam Coc. The stunning scenery, excellent guiding from Anna, a comfortable vehicle with a very friendly driver, and the flexibility to customise the itinerary made this one of our favourite day trips in Vietnam."
