The Evening
The music the river was made for
Ca Huế began as chamber music for the Nguyễn court — a few singers, a handful of instruments, played inside the citadel. When the court went, the music moved to the water. Huế people will tell you a boat at night is still the way to hear it.
This is that evening, in two hours. You board at Tòa Khâm at a quarter to seven and are handed a set of Huế court robes. Dinner comes out as the ropes come off, with the Trường Tiền bridge changing colour off the port side while you eat.
At eight the musicians take the low stage, every piece introduced in Vietnamese and English. Before the boat turns back, the lights are cut and you set a paper lotus lantern on the river. Back at Tòa Khâm at a quarter to nine.
Tòa Khâm wharf sits on Lê Lợi, a few minutes downstream of the Trường Tiền bridge — walking distance from most hotels on the south bank.
On the stage
What you will actually hear
Ca Huế is not a folk show put on for visitors. It is a court repertoire of about sixty surviving pieces, played by an ensemble small enough to hear each other breathe. Four instruments carry almost all of it.
The bright half
Quick, ceremonial pieces, played to open a set. They came south with the court and kept its formality — without a word of Vietnamese you can hear these were meant to be heard standing up.
The slow half
Unhurried, and by design a little sad — Huế music calls it buồn, which English does not translate cleanly. These come late in the set, when the boat is far enough out that the engine is the only other sound.
The songs stay in Vietnamese — they have to; the poetry is the piece. Everything around them is not: the host explains what each one is about, which instrument is which, and where it sits in the repertoire, in both Vietnamese and English.

How the evening runs
Every departure runs to the same shape, and only the first time really matters: be at Tòa Khâm by 18:45. The boat casts off at 19:00 and cannot wait for late arrivals.

Boarding at Tòa Khâm
Meet at the wharf on Lê Lợi. You are shown to your table, given a set of Huế court robes to change into, and left to take photographs on the bow while the boat is still alongside — the light on the river is at its best in these fifteen minutes.

Cast off, dinner served
The boat pulls out into the Perfume River and dinner comes out with it: a Huế set menu at your table, plus one drink of your choice. Trường Tiền bridge cycles through its colours on one side and Phu Văn Lâu passes on the other.

The Ca Huế performance
Tables cleared, house lights down, musicians on. Around forty-five minutes of Ca Huế — sung pieces and instrumental sets, drawn from both the bright and the slow repertoires — with the host introducing each one in Vietnamese and English.

Before the turn
The lotus lanterns
The lights are cut. Each guest is given a paper lotus lantern — hoa đăng — with a candle inside, lit at the rail and set on the water by hand. Huế families have done this for generations; the wish is yours to make or not.

Back at Tòa Khâm
The boat returns to the same wharf you left from. You are ten minutes on foot from the Lê Lợi hotel strip and five from the bridge, with the evening still young enough for a walk along the bank.

Tòa Khâm wharf on Lê Lợi, on the south bank, a few minutes downstream from the Trường Tiền bridge. Be there by 18:45 — the boat leaves at 19:00 and cannot wait for late arrivals. We send you a map pin with your confirmation.
Yes. The saloon where you eat and where the ensemble plays is enclosed and air-conditioned, so rain changes nothing about the evening except the view. The one thing that stops the boats is a storm warning from the river authority, and if that happens we move you to another night or refund you in full.

A Huế set menu served to your table, not a buffet, with one drink of your choice included. Tell us at booking about allergies or a vegetarian or vegan requirement and we will arrange it with the kitchen before the night.
No — it is offered, not required. Most guests do put it on, at least for the photographs while the boat is still tied up. Sizes run from child to adult XL, and you change on board.
Yes to both. The boat is moored against a fixed pontoon and boarding is a single step; there are no stairs on board and everyone is seated at a table for the whole evening. Children usually remember the lantern longest.
Every guest who takes a seat and a meal is charged the same $28 (750.000₫), children included. If you are travelling with a small child who will share with you, tell us their age when you book and we will confirm what the boat charges.
Yes — for a private group, a birthday, an anniversary or a proposal. Message Lana on WhatsApp with your date and numbers, or put it in the message box on the booking form, and we will quote a private charter.
Nothing is charged when you send the form. We confirm seats on the boat for your date first, and only then take a booking. You can pay your host in cash at the wharf on the night, which is what most guests do, or ask for a payment link — online payment adds a 15% platform payment fee, which the widget shows you before you send.
