The Shape of the Day
One river, and everything arranged along it
Huế is unusually kind to a day like this. The Citadel, the pagoda and the tomb sit within nine kilometres of each other, and the Perfume River threads between two of them — which is why the middle of this day is spent on a boat rather than in traffic. We work outward from the walls, upstream, and then inland.

Why the boat is in the middle, and not at the end. Almost every Huế itinerary sells a sunset cruise. We put the river between the Citadel and lunch instead, for two honest reasons: the light on the water is better before noon than after it, and forty-five minutes sitting down in the shade is worth far more after two and a half hours of walking a walled city than it is at the end of a day when you would rather be at your hotel. It also means Thiên Mụ is reached from the water, which is the only way it was ever meant to be approached.

Stop One • Đại Nội
The city inside the city
Behind the moat and ten kilometres of wall is a second walled city, and inside that a third — the Purple Forbidden City, where only the emperor, his family and his eunuchs could go. Two and a half hours is the least you can spend here and still understand it.
Through Ngọ Môn, not past it
Five entrances; for a century and a half the middle one was the emperor’s alone, and Bảo Đại gave up the seal here in 1945.
Thái Hòa, and the eighty columns
The throne hall still stands — eighty ironwood columns, lacquered red and gilded with dragons.
The parts most people miss
Trường Sanh, the Nine Dynastic Urns, the mandarin halls — the corners, not the central axis.
Stop Two • Sông Hương
Forty-five minutes with the engine barely on
The Perfume River is called that because of what used to fall into it upstream in autumn — blossom off the orchards, carried down through the city. You board a wooden dragon boat at the landing below the Citadel, and it takes you up past the market boats, under the bridges and out to where the banks go green and the pagoda appears on its bluff on the right-hand side.
The boat is the one part of the day you share. The car, the driver and the guide are yours alone; the dragon boat is a working Huế river boat and there may well be other passengers aboard. We would rather tell you that here than let you find it out at the landing. The fare is in your price, there is shade and there are seats, and it is still far and away the best way to arrive at Thiên Mụ.
Stop Three • Thiên Mụ
Seven storeys, and one Austin
The oldest pagoda in Huế, on a bluff above the river, founded in 1601 because a local woman was said to have prophesied that a lord would come and build one here. The tower everyone photographs, Phước Duyên, is much younger than the pagoda beneath it — and it is the shape the whole city is remembered by.

In a shed at the back sits the car that drove the monk Thích Quảng Đức to Saigon in June 1963, where he set himself alight in the road. Most visitors walk straight past it; your guide will not.
Stop Five • Tự Đức Tomb
He built it to be buried in, then lived in it for sixteen years
Tự Đức reigned longer than any other Nguyễn emperor and had the unhappiest time of it: he lost the south to the French, he had no children, and three thousand men were conscripted to build this place, which caused a revolt he then had to put down. So he came here instead. He wrote poetry on the lake, he fished from the pavilion you are looking at, and he had it landscaped so that nothing in it is symmetrical — a deliberate break with every rule the Citadel was built to.
It is the one stop on this day that rewards simply sitting down for ten minutes. Which is also why it is the one the nine o’clock start gives up: it is not a place to be walked at speed in the middle of the afternoon.

Three of these are the landmarks and one is a boat. The rest is barely twenty kilometres of driving — which is the quiet argument for doing Huế privately: you are not paying for distance, you are paying for the two and a half hours inside the walls to be explained to you rather than guessed at.

Shoulders and knees covered. Thiên Mụ is a working monastery with monks living in it, and the palaces are treated the same way. A light long-sleeve in the bag is enough.
Huế is hot, and it is flat. Almost all the walking is in the open inside the Citadel. Take a hat, and take the boat as the sit-down it is meant to be.
October to December is the wet season. The tour still runs — the palaces have roofs and the boat has a cabin — but bring something waterproof rather than an umbrella you have to hold.

The questions we actually get asked
Because the alternative is doing four things badly. From a nine o’clock pickup the Citadel would have to be walked at a jog, lunch lands at half past one, and you would arrive at Tự Đức’s twelve hectares of pine and lake in the hottest, hardest light of the day with an hour to see it in. We would rather take one stop out and let you have the other three properly. The price is the same either way — the car, the driver and the guide are booked for the day regardless, so there is nothing for us to give back and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Say so in the notes and we will talk it through honestly when we reply. It is physically possible, and some guests genuinely do want the later start more than they want the tomb done slowly. What we will not do is put it on the itinerary and then quietly run out of afternoon. If a later start matters to you, the usual answer is to keep the nine o’clock pickup and swap the tomb for a longer stop somewhere else.
The car and the guide are, genuinely — nobody else rides with you and the guide is yours for the whole day. The one exception is the boat. The trip up the Perfume River uses a shared Huế dragon boat, so you may have other passengers aboard for that forty-five minutes. Everything else is yours. That is also why the minimum is two people and why a solo booking costs more than half of a pair: the day costs us the same to run either way.
You are very welcome, and the price is $148 for the day rather than $80. The whole vehicle and the guide run for you exactly as they would for a group of six, so a solo booking is charged at 1.85× the per-person rate. Everything else about the day is identical. If you are also being collected from Đà Nẵng or Hội An, the transfer is $15 for the booking rather than per person — so a solo day from Hội An is $163.
Yes, and it is one of our most common requests. It costs $15 on the booking — once, however many of you there are — and it is a long day: roughly an hour and three quarters each way from Đà Nẵng through the Hải Vân tunnel, or about two hours from Hội An. We start earlier to protect the time in Huế itself, and you are usually back at your hotel in the early evening. Choose your city in the booking form and the total updates as you do.
Not on this tour — we take the tunnel, because the pass adds the better part of an hour each way and this day already has a full morning in it. If the pass is what you actually want, say so: it is a different trip and we would rather sell you that one properly than tack it onto this one and shorten the Citadel.
The fare is included. To be clear about what it buys: this is a shared Huế dragon boat, not a private charter, so there may be other passengers making the same trip upstream. It is the item most commonly quoted separately elsewhere in Huế, which is worth knowing when you compare prices. Your car meets you at Thiên Mụ afterwards, so you are not doubling back down the river.
More than people expect, and almost all of it flat. The Imperial City is a walled complex measured in kilometres, and two and a half hours inside it is a couple of kilometres on stone. Thiên Mụ has one flight of steps up from the river. Tự Đức is gentle, shaded and easy. There is no climbing anywhere on this day — if distance is the problem rather than steps, tell us in the notes and your guide will plan the Citadel around a shorter route.
Often, yes — it is your car. Khải Định is the usual addition and it is a genuinely different thing to look at: concrete, mosaic and black dragons rather than pine and water. It is a separate ticket and it needs an early start. Put it in the notes and we will tell you honestly whether it fits alongside everything else or whether something has to give.
Children are welcome, and the boat is usually the part they remember. Put their ages in the notes when you send the request and we will come back with the child rate for those ages — several of the Huế monument tickets are free or reduced for young children and we pass that straight on rather than charging a flat family price.
The tour runs. Huế genuinely is the wettest city in Vietnam between October and December, and locals will tell you the rain here is part of the place. The palaces have roofs, the boat has a cabin, and having your own car waiting at each gate is exactly when a private day pays for itself. If a real storm or a flood warning is forecast we will call you the evening before and offer to move the date instead.

At a quarter to seven a VIP dragon boat casts off from Tòa Khâm wharf, ten minutes’ walk from most Lê Lợi hotels: a Huế dinner as the city lights come on, a live Ca Huế performance from the old court repertoire with a bilingual host, and a paper lotus lantern for every guest to set on the water before the boat turns for home.
