How It Unfolds

Four steps from the road to the table

Every ingredient you eat travels a very short distance — from the market stall and the garden bed to the pan in front of you, all in one half-day.

Bicycles ready at the meeting point before the village ride 1

Step One

Cycle the village lanes

Leave the horns behind. A gentle, flat ride past rice fields, duck ponds and garden gates — no hills, no traffic, no rush.

Guests shopping for ingredients in the covered local market 2

Step Two

Shop the local market

Meet the vendors who supply the village kitchen. Learn what to look for, what things cost, and what the season is offering today.

Step Three

Harvest the garden

Back at the farm, pull vegetables from the soil and snap fresh corn straight off the stalk. What you pick is what you cook.

Step Four

Cook & share the table

Roll, fry, stir and season alongside your hosts — then sit down together and eat everything you made.

Grown, Not Bought

No distance between the garden and the plate

This is the countryside Hanoi still runs on. Ingredients are picked the morning you cook them, so the menu moves with the season — sweetcorn through the warm months, leafy greens and herbs when the air cools.

Cook with local hosts

Village cooks guide every step in a real home kitchen — no stiff demo counter, no rushing. Proper Vietnamese home cooking, explained as you go.

A season-led menu

Because everything comes out of the garden, the dishes shift through the year. You always cook a full spread — it simply reflects what is ripe that week.

Vegetarian by design

The vegetarian menu isn’t a stripped-down version of the other one. It’s a full menu in its own right — and honestly, we recommend it.

How the Day Runs

A half day, unhurried

Same flow, two sessions. Mornings start any half hour from 8:30 to 11:00 (to 10:30 if you add hotel pickup) — cooler for cycling, and the market is at its busiest. The afternoon runs at 2:30 only, and is quieter, ending in the softest light of the day.

About 5 hours door to door, including the ride, the market, the harvest, the class and the meal.

Start from Quán Tình Pagoda (see it on Maps), or add hotel pickup and we come to you.

Available as a small join-in group or a fully private experience.

Good to Know

Before you book

No. The route is flat, short and on quiet village roads with very little traffic, and the pace is deliberately gentle — we stop often. If you’d rather not cycle at all, say so in your booking notes and we’ll confirm what we can arrange for you.

Completely. There’s a full vegetarian menu — spring rolls, morning glory with garlic, tofu in tomato sauce, sweetcorn, rice and stir-fried bean sprouts with luffa — not a reduced version of the meat menu. We genuinely recommend it, and mixed groups of meat eaters and vegetarians cook side by side without any problem. Allergies and other dietary preferences can be accommodated too; just tell us when you book.

Both cover exactly the same flow. The morning session is flexible — start any half hour between 8:30 and 11:00 AM (last start 10:30 if you add hotel pickup) — and it’s cooler for cycling with the market at its liveliest. The afternoon session runs at 2:30 PM only; it’s quieter, suits late risers, and finishes with dinner in the golden light over the fields.

Comfortable clothes you can cycle in, closed shoes, sun protection and a hat. In the wetter months, a light rain layer is worth packing. You’ll be in a garden and a kitchen, so nothing you’d mind getting a little soil or kitchen splash on.

With the meeting point rate you make your own way to Quán Tình Pagoda (Chùa Quán Tình) in Long Biên — open it on Google Maps, for the start time you picked. With hotel pickup we collect you from your hotel and bring you back afterwards. The private hotel-pickup rate covers hotels in the Old Quarter and Hanoi centre.

Yes — families are very welcome, and harvesting corn tends to be a hit with children. Add their ages in the booking notes and we’ll confirm bike sizing and a reduced child rate when we reply.

Light rain rarely stops anything — the market, harvest, cooking and meal all go ahead. Only the ride depends on conditions. If the weather looks genuinely unsafe we’ll contact you beforehand to adjust the plan or move your date.

About 10 hours’ notice is usually enough — book by the evening before for a morning session, or first thing in the morning for the afternoon one. We can often arrange something sooner too; message us on WhatsApp and we’ll check. Booking earlier helps most in peak season and for private groups, since the hosts prepare the garden and the market list around your session.
